Although compass and straightedge is elegantly simple, there is also beauty in the power of being able to measure out distances and angles. (This is, of course, drafting.) It adds another "dimension" to the drawing, namely, the calculations, possibly very difficult or impressive, done off to the side to obtain the values of desired angles and lengths.
