The square of the diagonal of a rectangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the sides of a rectangle.

Or, the square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of its two legs.

The former seems a less imposing (less jargon filled) way of introducing the Pythagorean theorem.
