Are there unusual barriers to further psychological research into the "Lucifer Effect" (as named by Zimbardo)? Is it taboo to research?
If true on a broad scale, that is, a large amount of "bad" human behavior is induced by the environment and situation beyond the self-control of even the most noble and well-meaning, then this has profound implications for philosophy and society, especially crime and punishment, currently based heavily on the idea of personal responsibility (and blame).
It would be a very uncomfortable truth, something we wish we didn't know, hence the suspicion of a research taboo. Granted it is difficult to research due to the cost and difficulty of avoiding (further) unethical psychological experiments. But are there barriers beyond these?
Is it not a coincidence that what is considered ethical experimentation limits discovering results on this topic?
